What’s that sound?

Over the weekend, I kicked off a new specialty show on CKDJ.net. A video game music show named after this blog, Played by Ear. The idea isn’t to just play the music and say, this is cool and listen to it. It’s more about how the music in games goes alongside the narrative. The music steers your actions and affects your decisions. The right sound might tell you when danger is nearby, if you should hide, fight, run or look for something in your immediate area.

Take a sound track like Shadow of the Colossus for example. The classical elements that are incorporated into tracks like the Prologue to an Ancient Land, Prayer or End of Battle, add a haunting quality to Wanderer’s quest as well a remorse for the Colossi that are slain. The music also hits home that while this is a story of love, it’s also one that questions aspects of religion and self. The music helps to divulge pieces of the protagonist’s personality and the struggle they’re facing.

Now more than ever, video games are becoming truly artistic and immersive experiences that far eclipse that of film or music alone. This medium blends all of them together and puts the player in the leading role. It takes the story your playing through and makes it your own.
